Case Study: Walk Free Foundation

Over 45 million people are enslaved in the world today.

The Walk Free Foundation works to provide an integrated strategy to modern slavery. Through the Foundation’s Global Slavery Index, world-leading research is undertaken to provide measurement of the size and scale of modern slavery, as well as assess vulnerability and governmental responses. The Foundation also works with faiths, governments, business and NGOs throughout the world to agitate for change and support initiatives dedicated to the eradication of modern slavery in all of its forms.

The foundation publishes the Global Slavery Index, an authoritative report that is making real impact in the world and driving government, community and business intervention to prevent slavery. The report provides a map, country by country, of the estimated prevalence of modern slavery, together with information about the steps each government has taken to respond to this issue. This information allows an objective comparison and assessment of both the problem and adequacy of the response in 167 countries.

WHY DATAMOTIVATE
DataMotivate was tasked with compiling data on 98 indicators of “good practice” by Governments, drawing on a defined list of reports. This data was used as part of the research process followed by the Walk Free Foundation to score the countries efforts to eliminate modern slavery. The Foundation’s data requirements were exact and required precise analysis of the text to ensure that the correct data was captured and there were no omissions.

RESULT
DataMotivate mobilized a team of project managers, data analysts and quality assurance staff. Our project managers worked with the Walk Free Foundation’s Research Team and developed a thorough process for document selection, analysis of the research, data collection and quality assurance. Data was collected against 98 indicators, grouped into activities, which are then scored out of 100 total points. In order to continually improve the Index, all data collected in the production of the government response component can be accessed in a searchable database, accessed at globalslaveryindex.org.
